ECHTILE EXHIBITION

Japanese designer Nosigner created the space for an exhibition called Techtile at the University of Tokyo last November.TECHTILE exhibition mainly staged by 2 researchers of the university, Yasuaki Kakehi, Masashi Nakatani and nosigner. The exhibition focuses at integration of tactile design & latest tactile technology. Nosigner designed visual identities & space design.

Her is what Nosigner has to say:

I was wondering about the primordial tactile experience
before I designed the space.

And finally, I realized the thermal sensing like touching ice
is one of the most primitive tactile experience.

In this exhibition design, I tried to make the space
where recall the memory of tactual sensation of ice.

‘Tacticicle’ is the trial to make huge icicle made from food wrap film.
Huge icicle tubes are made from food wrap film more than 10000m.

You can feel as if your own body get iced in the space.

This was my first experience in spatial design. It may not have been the most sophisticateddesign, but it was completed with an extremely low cost. I really appreciate the ‘Silver’ award, because I can aim higher next time.

This solution for an exhibition held at the University of Tokyo, is exemplary of the positive effects that constraints can have upon the creative process. The TECHTILE exhibition is an applied exhibition focused on the integration of tactile design and the latest tactile technologies. Dictated by an extremely low budget, the exhibition’s design sought pertinence through the use of cheap, quotidian material. Responding to the exhibition’s thematic trajectory, cellophane and aluminum foil – unlikely as they seem – have been adopted to form the foundations of a new architectural material. Comprising over 10,000-metres of wrapping fi lms, the exhibition fl oor is characterised by fi ve icicle cylinders. This so-called icicle texture is achieved through the heavy compression of 16 layers of plastic and aluminum fi lm. The resultant material serves a range of versatile functions within the exhibition, from lighting to signage, but more persuasively, provides a pensive overview of the event’sconceptual concerns.

About nosigner

The word ‘design’ originates from the Latin word ‘designare’ meaning de-sign. On the other hand, ‘nosign’means no-sign which has no signature on it. Nosigner is somebody who designs invisible things without an explicit signature.
